Motive, 2014

Created as part of my thesis project at Cawthra Park Secondary school in Mississauga, ON. I created this body of work while exploring how television and social media impact the development of a generation.

These light boxes were constructed with MDF, frosted mylar, coloured tissue paper, and fluorescent tube lights. The lettering was cut out using a CNC router.

From one direction, you see the words “money” and “morals” to contrast the possible motives of media companies. From the other direction, you see “attention” and “experience”, questioning the motives of social media users. I was intrigued by how many social media users (myself included at the time) were motivated by imminent attention online for doing something as opposed to the experience itself - think “do it for the Vine”.
